If you've ever needed a reason to stop buying products that are tested on animals then Scarlett's story might very well be the reason that you stop today.
Scarlett's Story
Scarlett was born at Marshall BioResources (MBR) in New York, one of many sites set up to breed Beagles purely for the purpose of testing them for painful, cruel and mostly unnecessary experiments. These dogs spend their whole life in labs and are then killed. They are literally bred for a lifetime of suffering. Below is a video narrated by Scarlett's owner Janie.
When she was born her ear was tattooed with a federal number - 2796105 - the first sign that she was seen as property, trackable, disposable and unwanted for any human attention. She had no identity except this number, and no name. The lab is so sadistic that it even adds smiley faces to the tattoo. You can still see the number on her ear in this photo below.

At only a few months old she was flown on a long, cold and terrifying journey to Hungary where she was subjected to cruel and painful 'compliance' testing. These tests include force feeding chemicals and tying dogs down and forcing them to inhale chemicals for weeks, months and sometimes years to measure the effects on their organs. Sometimes pesticides, drugs and toxic substances are forced into the dogs via a tube in their throat (a procedure called gavage). The results, as you can imagine, are barbaric and cause seizures, vomiting, tremors and death. Often the dogs are dissected and killed even if they survive the abuse.
Scarlett endured this life for two long years, she learned that the less she moved, the less it hurt. She was destined to die there had it not been for the heroic intervention of the incredible Beagle Freedom Project who rescued her and six of her friends in what was deemed the Bond Mission. Fortunately for her she was then adopted by a wonderful woman called Janie who gives her all the love and affection that she was so sorely lacking in the first years of her life.
She was no longer a number, she had a name and a family but those left behind are never forgotten and Scarlett and Janie have spent the last 8 years campaigning to bring a change in the law. This has to stop. Animal testing is cruel and barbaric and it doesn't work - non animal methods have proved time and again to be more successful but yet these tests still continue. Is this more about money and jobs than medical progress? It seems so. Did you know that cancer in mice has been cured three times? But it doesn't translate to humans because our genetic make-up isnot the same. But the tests continue.
We're so pleased that Scarlett survived, that she is loved and cherished. But we must keep fighting for those still locked in labs. This happens in the UK so don't think that we aren't to blame too.
Don't buy products that are tested on animals. This is the first step to helping.
