Meet BigWig The Bunny

Updated: May 6

When you last chose your mascara did you think about how it came into production? How it was tested or what process it went through? The sad truth is that not many people do think about this at all. But we all should.

This is BigWig who was saved from a Chinese lab after spending years being tested on - basically for our vanity. Thankfully he's safe now and can live out the rest of his years in peace with the love that he deserves.

BigWig (and countless other rabbits) was subjected to the horrendous Draize Eye and Skin test which involved putting him in full restraints whilst painful chemicals were dripped into his eyes and scraped on his skin. This test is known to be unreliable but it continues to be carried out. They use rabbits because they don't have tear ducts so the chemical stays in the eye for longer and can't be cried away. This doesn't need to happen as there are non cruel alternatives such as The BCOP (Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability) test and the ICE (Isolated Chicken Eye) test which have already been validated and accepted as suitable replacements. There is also a cell based Fluorescein Leakage Test which can be used. Most recently The Humane World For Animals reported that scientists in Japan have developed a vitro eye method which cleverly uses donated human cornea cells.

This is why your choices are so important to animals like BigWig. Choose companies that don't use 'new' ingredients that need to be tested when there are thousands of options already available that are deemed safe.
