Pet or Experiment?

Updated: May 6

So this photo is our guinea pig Bubble. Cute eh? He's our beloved pet but he's one of the lucky ones. Across the world guinea pigs are subjected to pain and suffering locked away in cruel labs and never knowing love or affection.

In 2023 the US Department of Agriculture reported that 167,672 guinea pigs were used in experiments. Most concerning is the sharp 9% rise in Category E experiments which mean that the animals are subject to extreme pain and distress without any pain relief. Guinea pigs (47%) and hamsters (34%) were most frequently used in these experiments. (1)

According to the researchers who continue to carry out these cruel experiments guinea pigs are chosen because they are biologically similar to humans and vitamin C was discovered through monitoring their diet back in 1908. They were also key to the development of vaccines for TB and respiratory and infectious disease. But science has moved on and alternative methods now exist that are better, more robust and cause no pain and we should be pursuing these rather than falling back on old methods that cause immeasurable suffering to sentient beings.
